On Free Comic Book Day 2017, Drawn & Quarterly released a preview of the upcoming POPPIES OF IRAQ, detailing writer Brigitte Findakly's memoir about growing up in Iraq.

This week, on Wednesday, September 6, the full graphic novel releases in stores. Findakly shares memories of her middle class childhood, touching on cultural practices, the education system, Saddam Hussein's state control, and her family's history as Orthodox Christians in the arab world.

"Though these memories are rendered whimsically," said a Publishers Weekly review, "[Findakly] notes often which sites of her youth have been destroyed, rendered unrecognizable, or taken over by ISIS. This contrast is the books greatest strength: Findakly and cocreator Trondheim, her husband and an acclaimed French cartoonist himself, understand intimately that children do not stay children forever and innocence is not eternal."

POPPIES OF IRAQ is available in stores on Wednesday, September 6--make sure you stop by your local comic shop to pick up your copy before they run out! You can view a preview on Drawn & Quarterly's website here.

Poppies of Iraq is Brigitte Findakly's nuanced chronicle of her relationship with her homeland Iraq, co-written and drawn by her husband, the acclaimed cartoonist Lewis Trondheim. In spare and elegant detail, they share memories of her middle class childhood touching on cultural practices, the education system, Saddam Hussein's state control, and her family's history as Orthodox Christians in the arab world. Poppies of Iraq is intimate and wide-ranging; the story of how one can become separated from one's homeland and still feel intimately connected yet ultimately estranged.
