Interview by Troy-Jeffrey Allen
Known for his work on his independent comic series Gumbo, Lamar Mathurin is now taking his art to the spaceways. It all happens inside Titan's new mini-series... Cowboy Bebop.
Based in the world of Cowboy Bebop, the story kicks off in the year 2171, where Spike, Faye, and Jet are on the hunt for a bounty. This prize however seems to have unlimited luck!
Now that Cowboy Bebop #1 has officially hit stores, let's take a look at the appropriately jazzy art of Lamar Mathurin...
How did you get involved with Cowboy Bebop?
I think my name got passed around through my Instagram following. During the pandemic I was posting a lot of art, I was working and advertising my webcomic (Gumbo), and I was hosting a sort of livestream podcast on Instagram where I spoke to over forty artists and talked about their process. During this time I got a lot of eyeballs on my channel and was introduced to many artists that worked in the comic industry alongside animators, and designers of all sorts. In the end, I believe the artist Caspar Wijingaard - who works as the artist of Home Sick Pilots, written by the same writer for the Cowboy Bebop comic - swung my work in Dan Watters direction. I then did test pages that they saw potential in it.
How did you get into comic books as a fan?
I got into comics pretty young. When I was little my mom was very suspicious of babysitters. It was just me and her for a while before my brother was in the mix. During the summers she would drop me off at the library and the librarians would become my babysitters. They were a sweet group of ladies that showed me around during the summers, trying to get me to read books when all I was really interested in was learning how to play Runescape. One of the librarians was a younger woman that was probably in her mid-20s at the time. Her name was Ms. Peal. She was the cool one that got me into the comic book section when all attempts to get me to read books failed. I was hooked. When I read all the comics, she would order more for me, including some off-brand manga, and some old throw-away Heavy Metal magazines. I would donate a dollar to the library and she would give me a stack of computer paper to draw on. Those were good times.
How did you get into comic books as a professional?
I have been attempting to do so for the past decade. This will be my first real opportunity to call myself a professional. Outside a Kickstarter I did with some crummy writers, and my own personal webcomic, this is, in my opinion, great. Gumbo is my pride and joy. I plan on finishing that comic like the professional I have become.
What tools do you use to create?
When it comes to tools, I'm pretty old school. Sumi ink, brushes, nibs. Drawing digital is cool, however, too many options make it hard for me to make something consistently without the pressure of a deadline. The less the better.
What’s next for you?
I don't know what's next for me. I'll probably finish all the little projects in my head. Not sure what to expect.
Special thanks to Lamar Mathurin.
