Read our interview below with Kiernan Sjursen-Lien to learn more about what to expect in BOOM! Studios Free Comic Book Day title, Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake

Article ImageFree Comic Book Day (FCBD): For those who might be new to your comic book, give us a quick rundown of the story!

This title is about Fionna and Cake on an adventure to deliver punch to Prince Gumball's party, while Cake tries to find a punchline to her story along the way.

FCBD: What genre is your title?

It's a comedic adventure story!

FCBD: What has been your favorite part of the book or main character(s) to tackle?

It's been an absolute pleasure working with this title because the characters are so wacky and wild and have such great senses of humor. Their arguments and differences make for very fun storytelling, and the rules of the Adventure Time universe are so malleable as well that the sky is really the limit on what sort of adventures the characters could embark on.

FCBD: What other titles would you compare to yours? “If a comic reader likes _______ , they should pick up my title?”

Of course checking out the other Adventure Time titles is a good start, but I think the Lumberjanes series has a similar quirky sensibility to the writing of the characters! And if you like my story in particular, I'd definitely recommend checking out the Over the Garden Wall comics, since those were a fun series to work on as well.

FCBD: Looking to the future, is there anything you can tease about what's upcoming for the title and its characters?

You won't get any secrets out of me! ;)

FCBD: What initially got you interested in comics? (or What is your favorite thing about working in comics?)

I've loved comics since I was little, I was always picking up the weeks comics when I went to the store, and would devour comics like Calvin and Hobbes or even semi-books like Captain Underpants in the library. We used to have a rivalry in my elementary school where we'd draw up our own comics and put them in the library, and hope people would check them out (and whoever got the most people talking about their comics would be the weekly 'winner'). It was good fun, albeit a little competitive for elementary schoolers, and I never lost my interest in comics since then!

FCBD: Many newcomers will pick up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?

I mostly read comics in the funnies section of the newspaper, back when people used to do that, haha! So, I was a big reader of weekly comic strips like Garfield or Calvin and Hobbes or Get Fuzzy... I wish I had been able to go to a FCBD as a kid and get a whole book for free!

FCBD: Tell us why everyone should read comic books!

Comics are another means of telling a story, and are on even keel with novels or movies or anything of the sort. They can still tackle just as challenging subject matter and vocabulary as their novel cousins! I think a lot of people forget this and think of comics as simply kiddie fare, but honestly some of the best stories I've ever seen took the form of comic books. You see a lot of amazing culturally important work in comics, plus the visual stimulation can make them an easier read for people who may have trouble focusing on a page of just words. There's really no way to go wrong with comics, I love them dearly and hope to continue to work with them my entire life.

FCBD: What is your favorite part about Free Comic Book Day? What do you think is the best part of Free Comic Book Day?

Free Comic Book Day is amazing!!! My first one was in college, and it was so amazing to be able to meet with so many like-minded people who also loved comics, and to be able to get your hands on so many cool comics in one day! It's the best!! Now as a creator they're cool in a whole new way, helping me meet fans and draw stuff for kids interested in comics themselves and give advice to those who may be interested in getting into comics as well... it's really one of the coolest days of the year. :)

FCBD: Where do you plan to spend Free Comic Book Day?

I'm not sure yet, but I like to make plans with local comic shops in the LA area to come down and do free drawings and book signings, so I'm hoping to do that again this year if the opportunity arises! I'll be sure to post to my twitter (@zakeno) if I'll be doing any drawings again this year, so if you wanna try and meet me or any of your favorite comic creators this year, it'd be good to keep an eye on social media!
