FCBD Interview: Katie Cook Talks About Gronk and Friends

What's a tiny green monster to do when she's too ridiculously cute to be terrifying? Turn to the magical power of baking, of course! You're in for a comic treat with Gronk and Friends (with a special appearance by the Hero Cats of Stellar City)!

Free Comic Book Day talked with comic creator Katie Cook about Gronk and Friends, Action Lab's 2015 Free Comic Book Day offering.

Free Comic Book Day: For those who might be new to your comic book, give a quick rundown. What can we expect to see in terms of story and art?

Katie Cook: My story is a prequel story to my popular webcomic, Gronk: A Monster’s Story! It’s a fun, all-ages comic. Super cute and silly… In my normal comic, Gronk (a cute monster) comes to live in the human world. The FCBD story is about her life BEFORE that when she lived with the other monsters… who are kind of jerks.

Free Comic Book Day: What has been your favorite part of the book or character to tackle?

Katie Cook: Getting to draw Gronk on a much larger scale has been a blast. Usually, I draw a four-panel gag strip… This is a FULL ADVENTURE! I loved doing it, and I can’t wait to take Gronk in this direction again.

Free Comic Book Day: Tell FCBD fans why they should pick your book first on Free Comic Book Day!

Katie Cook: If you hate things that are fun, you’ll probably hate my book. If you LIKE things that are fun, you should totally grab it. Do you hate fun? DO you?

Free Comic Book Day: What are you most looking forward to for Free Comic Book Day?

Katie Cook: I LOVE FCBD because of kids. I love kids (I have two!). I love knowing a kid has discovered a comic or characters that they love and enjoy to read!

Free Comic Book Day: What other titles would you associate with your FCBD book? “If a comic reader likes _______ , they should pick up my title"?

Katie Cook: Well, they should pick up Gronk: A Monster's Story volumes 1-4 published by Action Lab. I also work on IDW’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! If you like my writing on that, enjoy my art AND writing on this!

Free Comic Book Day: What do you think is the best part about Free Comic Book Day?

Katie Cook: Drawing! I usually spend all day at a comic shop doing sketches for free!

Free Comic Book Day: What’s your favorite thing about working in comics?

Katie Cook: I get to MAKE COMICS as a JOB! It’s the only job I’ve ever wanted, so the fact that I get to wake up every morning and draw? Awesome.

Free Comic Book Day: Where will you be for this year’s FCBD? Do you have any annual FCBD traditions?

Katie Cook: I’ll be at Double Midnight in Manchester, NH. Never been! I hear their FCBD celebration is huge! You can find me there doing fun, silly drawings and talking up a storm.

Free Comic Book Day: Many newcomers will pick up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?

Katie Cook: Archie! My mom’s old Archie comics… that’s where the addiction started.

Free Comic Book Day: Looking to the future of the book, is there anything you can tease about what's upcoming?

Katie Cook: There’s monsters in it… and cats.

Free Comic Book Day: Tell us why everyone should read comic books?

Katie Cook: Because they’re awesome? I don’t trust anyone who hates comics… Ha!
