Cory Godbey’s Labyrinth is based on Jim Henson’s short story and movie about a 15-year-old girl, Sarah, who accidentally wishes away her baby brother, Toby, to the Goblin King, Jareth. He will keep Toby unless Sarah can complete the Labyrinth in 13 hours. Godbey talks about his comic and his excitement in regards to being a part of Free Comic Book Day 2013.

FCBD: For those who might be new to your comic book, give a quick rundown. What can we expect to see in terms of story and art?

CORY GODBEY: You might see a Labyrinth, a sprawling conflict with goblins, or a tea party.

FCBD: What has been your favorite part of book or character to tackle?

CG: I've always loved Jim Henson's worlds and the chance to get to play in one and contribute to the legacy even in a small way is always wonderful. The characters from Labyrinth are amazing; I absolutely love to draw them. I would say that's my favorite part, getting to interact with the characters and draw them. (Thanks and apologies to Brian Froud!)

FCBD: Tell FCBD fans why they should pick your book first on Free Comic Book Day!

CG: Where else are you going to see Sir Didymus joyously crashing through the ranks of a goblins horde?

FCBD: What other titles would you associated with your FCBD book? “If a comic reader likes _______ , they should pick up my title"?

CG: Henson stories, fantasy, adventure, or…goblins maybe?

FCBD: What’s your favorite part about working in comics?

CG: I love getting to create story and tell it with pictures.

FCBD: Many newcomers will pick up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?

CG: Calvin & Hobbes.

FCBD: Where will you be for this year’s FCBD? Do you have any annual FCBD traditions?

CG: I'll be splitting my time between two of my local comic shops: Richard’s Comics and Collectibles, and Borderlands Comics and Games.

FCBD: Looking to the future of the book, is there anything you can tease about what's upcoming?

CG: Goblins. Also, chess.

FCBD: Tell us why everyone should read comic books?

CG: Because stories with pictures are the best.
