(IN) This year's Free Comic Book Day
was a huge success! We started setting up for the big event at 8 A.M. (two hours
before the start of the
festivities.) We set up about 10 long tables around the perimeter of our big 900
sq foot "Gaming Room" at the back of our store. At each table or grouping of
tables, we set up stations for particular interests. The first station upon
entering the room was where the bulk of the comics were distributed. We had the
"Mature" comics behind the table on a book case that was clearly labelled, so we
could avoid any confusion or miscommunication. We also set up our door prize
raffle (with prizes from Sideshow Toys, plus posters & t-shirts from the store)
and a sign-up sheet for our weekly e-mail newsletter. The next station around
the corner was a table set up for our Comic Creators Alliance group, where local
creators showed some of their scripts & artwork and shared information with
people interested in getting into making their own comics. The Wolverine
HeroClixs were handed out from this station as an incentive to get customers to
stop and take a look. Next up was artist/publisher Allen Freeman with Fan Attic
Press talking about his publications and experiences. He had a free comic book
edition of Slam Bang to hand out to attendees. Right next to him were local
creators Nathan Bonner(Carbondale, IL)who was giving away free copies of Indavio
and Michael Kasinger(Lawrenceville IL)who was doing free scetches for our
attendees. Rounding the corner was a station for Action Figure Fanatics which
displayed numerous figures and gave people a forum to talk about their favorite
toys. Finishing off the back room set-up, we had a station for our Star Wars
fans manned by the local Star Wars Fanforce team. There we had a Storm Trooper
and two different types of Star Wars Rebel Commandos on hand to keep the crowd
under control and to help give out the Star Wars/Conan flip book.
Attempts were being made by these factions to recruit more minions for their
Empire/Rebel Forces! With everything set up and ready to go, we opened the doors
for the crowd of about 55 people to rush in and grab for their free comic books!
A total head count of 325 people marched in before 5:00pm, and we still hadn't
seen the end of them! The local gaming organization (Evansville Gaming Guild)
pitched in by having a fund-raising cook-out in front of the store, which drew
attention to the store front and kept our hectic employees and guests well-fed!
Also, slinging his way around the store was Spider-Man himself! The kids were
very excited about meeting their favorite superhero, and he made a lot of new
friends! We had a great time seeing all our regular customers and meeting a ton
of new people, too! We received many compliments for our giveaways, organization
and down right entertainment. We are already looking forward to next yeat with
the goal of making freecomicbookday 2007 better than this one. Viva la
freecomicbookday.
