FCBD Interview: Cullen Bunn Makes Terrible Lizard Your New Friend

Article Image

What happens when your scientist dad opens up a portal to the past during one of his top-secret projects that sends a bewildered t-rex to our timeline? Name it and take it home, of course! Jess's new best friend may have several rows of sharp teeth, tiny arms, and a tail, but he's just as lovable as Fluffy or Fido!

Free Comic Book Day talked with comic writer Cullen Bunn about Terrible Lizard, Oni Press' 2015 Free Comic Book Day offering.

Free Comic Book Day: For those who might be new to your comic book, give a quick rundown. What can we expect to see in terms of story and art?

Cullen BunnTerrible Lizard is the story of a girl and her dinosaur. In this fun, sweet, action-packed story, we meet Jess, a lonely teenage girl whose father is running the time displacement project at a top secret government research facility. She doesn't completely understand what "time displacement" means... until the experiments bring a T-Rex from the past into our world. The dinosaur seems fearsome at first, but it quickly bonds with Jess. The girl names the big lizard "Wrex" and the two of them embark on some wild adventures.

This is an all-ages book, and I think adults as well as kids will get a kick out of it.

Free Comic Book Day: What has been your favorite part of the book or character to tackle?

Cullen BunnI have to admit, I love the way Drew draws Wrex, the dinosaur. He puts so much personality into the T-Rex, it's impossible not to love the beast.

Free Comic Book Day: Tell FCBD fans why they should pick your book first on Free Comic Book Day!

Cullen BunnTerrible Lizard is a complete first issue, clocking in at 22 pages. It's a book that you can enjoy by yourself, your kids can read, or you can read with them.

Free Comic Book Day: What are you most looking forward to for Free Comic Book Day?

Cullen BunnI spend every Free Comic Book Day signing at a different store. That gives me the chance to meet new readers and talk to fans of my work. That's hard to beat.

Free Comic Book Day: What other titles would you associate with your FCBD book? “If a comic reader likes _______ , they should pick up my title"?

Cullen BunnI'd say if you like Godzilla or Devil Dinosaur or Super Dinosaur, you'll probably find something to like in Terrible Lizard.

Free Comic Book Day: What do you think is the best part about Free Comic Book Day?

Cullen BunnThere's simply an excitement in the air at these comic book shops when Free Comic Book Day rolls around. It's energizing for me.

Free Comic Book Day: What’s your favorite thing about working in comics?

Cullen BunnI love telling stories, and I want those stories to be read. Working in comic books gives me the chance to tell dozens of tales in a wide range of genres.

Free Comic Book Day: Many newcomers will pick up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?

Cullen BunnIt's a little murky for me. I vaguely remember reading an old issue of X-Men (the original team) when I was very young. Maybe the first issue of a comic that really stuck with me, though, was Avengers #154, which freaked me out because I thought the Avengers had been killed in the issue. But it was Micronauts #7 that was the comic book that made me love comic books.

Free Comic Book Day: Where will you be for this year’s FCBD? Do you have any annual FCBD traditions?

Cullen BunnI will be signing at Powers Comics and Collectibles in Green Bay, WI. The only real tradition I have is signing comics all day long, which is fine by me.

Free Comic Book Day: Looking to the future of the book, is there anything you can tease about what's upcoming?

Cullen BunnIn Terrible Lizard, Jess and Wrex are in for a hair-raising adventure. Because of the strange radiations surrounding Wrex, wormholes to the past are opening up around him, and bizarre mutant creatures are spilling into our world. Only Wrex and Jess stand between these creatures and humanity. So there will be plenty of monster vs. monster action, lots of humor, and some truly heartfelt moments between these characters.

Free Comic Book Day: Tell us why everyone should read comic books?

Cullen BunnThere's pretty much a comic book out there for every taste. Super heroes, sure, but there are also action, horror, sci fi, romance, slice of life, and pretty much any other kind of story you can think of. There are comics for kids, comics for all-ages (like Terrible Lizard), and comics for mature readers. There are so many choices and so many different stories to read, I think it is a great time to read comics.
