Cassidy is a young woman who is just discovering her true power, while battle-weary warrior Miya has spent years honing her own. The two must learn to trust one another and combine their forces in order to secure their futures, but what happens when the past begins to haunt them? An all-new adventure begins in the Soulfire universe with the Free Comic Book Day Eternal Soulfire story!

Free Comic Book Day talked with comic writer J.T. Krul about Eternal Soulfire, part of Aspen MLT's 2015 Free Comic Book Day offering.

Free Comic Book Day: For those who might be new to your comic book, give a quick rundown. What can we expect to see in terms of story and art?

J.T. KrulThe world of Soulfire is an amazing place. It's the future and the world is dominated  by technology, but at the same time the spirit of magic is returning to the world after being dormant for centuries—winged warriors, magical energy, and even dragons can now be found lurking in the shadows. The Soulfire universe is one of adventure and danger and mystery. It's high-fantasy on an epic scale.

Free Comic Book Day: What has been your favorite part of the book or character to tackle?

J.T. KrulI've been writing Soulfire for a decade now. With Eternal Soulfire, I get to explore the world from an entirely new angle as we introduce a girl named Cassidy. She is no destined spirit like Malikai. She is no chosen one. Cassidy is simply a girl who discovers her own connection to the magic, and her world will never be the same again.

Free Comic Book Day: Tell FCBD fans why they should pick your book first on Free Comic Book Day!

J.T. KrulWell, I've already talked about the story, but comics is first and foremost a visual medium, and the reason fans should put the Aspen FCBD issue at the top of their list is because of the tremendous art to be found inside. For Eternal Soulfire, I am thrilled to be reunited with Alex Konat. We worked together previously on my Mindfield project, and I have been dying to do something else with him. He's got an incredibly clean style and the energy and emotion of the story jumps off the page.

Free Comic Book Day: What are you most looking forward to for Free Comic Book Day?

J.T. KrulEverything. It's such a great day for the industry. Everyone is excited, from long-time readers to new fans wandering in off the streets to see what all the hoopla is about. Signings, free gifts, artists sketching all-day, people in costumes. It's a total blast. And, kids!

Free Comic Book Day: What other titles would you associate with your FCBD book? “If a comic reader likes _______ , they should pick up my title"?

J.T. Krul: Even though Soulfire is not a super-hero book, its tone meshes with Teen Titans. I was fortunate enough to write Teen Titans over at DC for a few years and they both have a similar vibe—younger characters thrown into extraordinary circumstances.

Free Comic Book Day: What do you think is the best part about Free Comic Book Day?

J.T. KrulLots of kids. The energy and enthusiasm they bring is priceless. I sure wish I had something like FCBD when I was younger. It's like Christmas in May!

Free Comic Book Day: What’s your favorite thing about working in comics?

J.T. Krul: The collaboration. Writing is a rather solitary experience, but when working in comics, you get to interact with all sorts of creative artists as the project comes together—from the publisher and the editors, to the artist, the colorist, and the letterer. It's great watching what I write come to life one page at a time.

Free Comic Book Day: Many newcomers will pick up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?

J.T. Krul: Uncanny X-Men #132. Found it in a box in my uncle's room one summer and I was hooked. Instantly.

Free Comic Book Day: Where will you be for this year’s FCBD? Do you have any annual FCBD traditions?

J.T. Krul: Being in Los Angeles, it's fun because I can hit more than one spot over the course of the day. Not sure where I'll be landing this year but past favorites have included Collector's Paradise, 4 Color Fantasies, Earth-2 and Golden Apple.

Free Comic Book Day: Looking to the future of the book, is there anything you can tease about what's upcoming?

J.T. KrulIn Eternal Soulfire, Cassidy will come across a face familiar to readers of the book—Miya. And while, Miya will try to help Cassidy forge a path in her new world, the warrior has her own agenda, as she tries to cope with the ghost of the past. Literally.

Free Comic Book Day: Tell us why everyone should read comic books?

J.T. KrulTwo simple reasons. Great stories. Great art.
