The Comic Bug is launching its most ambitious FREE COMIC BOOK DAY event to date.  The store has doubled orders for FREE COMICS from previous years, stocking over 20,000 free comic books to give away to attendees.  In addition, over two dozen comic creators will be on-hand to meet comic fans, including UNCANNY AVENGERS/CAPTAIN AMERICA writer RICK REMENDER, SIMPSONS artist PHIL ORTIZ, DEADPOOL artist SCOTT KOBLISH and ELEPHANTMEN creator RICHARD STARKINGS.

In addition to comic book creator talent, some of Los Angeles most renowned COSPLAYERS will be available to take pictures with fans and family members.  Attendees can expect to see the likes of WONDER WOMAN, BATMAN, SCARLETT WITCH and G.I. JOE’s THE BARONESS.  The BEACH CITY ROLLER DERBY GIRLS will also be on-hand to help distribute free comics and perform stunts for onlookers.

The Comic Bug is also publishing the first-ever comic book store EXCLUSIVE free comic, the GUNS A’BLAZIN/MOUSTACHETRONAUTS TEASER PLEASER EDITION, limited to 500 copies.  The creators will be attending to sign and draw sketches for attendees.

The day will wrap up with an after-party for the creators featuring live music by The Do-Its and a DJ set by DJ C-DIDDY.

Pop Culture Comix is teaming up with Harvesters ,The Community Food Network, and will sponsor a food and fund drive, Saturday,

May 4th FREE COMIC BOOK DAY from 10 to 5 here at the store. Donations received through the drive will help Harvesters network feed those in need throughout Kansas City. In appreciation for your donations, you may take 1 extra FCBD book for every item you donate. It is sometimes difficult to believe that hunger exists in Kansas City. Most people think of hunger in terms of famine and mass starvation which are terrible tragedies, but not something that affects people every day in our own community.

Hunger in our community is often more subtle, like a child who stuffs his pockets during lunch at school so he has food to eat at home in the evening. It is a parent who may be ironically overweight, because sugar and carbohydrate-laden foods are often the least expensive at the local store. It is a senior citizen who goes without food in order to buy medicine, further jeopardizing their already fragile health. The reality is that there are hungry people in Kansas City. Harvesters agencies provide assistance to nearly 60,000 people every week. And fully half of those are children and the elderly.

Your much valued contribution on FCBD means much needed help, and hope, will be available to those who need it. As you head out to visit us on FCBD be sure to grab a few items to show your support. Your generosity makes a difference.

Illustrator extraordinaire Jim Mahfood will be returning to his hometown of St. Louis for his ONLY in-store signing for his newest project, EVERYBODY LOVES TANK GIRL. Don't miss your chance to meet Jim Mahfood at Star Clipper on Friday, May 3 from 7 to 9 pm!

Mahfood collaborated with Tank Girl co-creator Alan C. Martin to bring you Tank Girl as you've never seen her before: wild, raw, foul-mouthed and rockin' in Mahfood's signature style. Finally, everyone's favorite outback anarchist is back to blow things up, swear profusely and offend the elderly!

DJ Mahf will be will be spinning records the whole night and the event is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing Company.

After the Tank Girl release, make sure to catch Jim Mahfood and DJ Mahf at the Gramophone for a late-night after party. We are thrilled to include Brian O’Halloran as our guest of honor for our annual Free Comic Book Day celebration! Brian had the staring as Dante in Kevin Smith’s breakout movie ‘Clerks’. Started with a youth theater group in Tennessee called The Dreamweavers, in productions of Annie, Alice in Wonderland, Tom Sawyer, The Foreigner, and Anne Frank. In 2010, Alex moved to the Atlanta, GA area to pursue screen acting . From Franklin & Bash to other shows like Teen Wolf, The Vampire Diaries, Drop Dead Diva, Hall Pass, The Collection and several others. In 2011 he was asked to come in for "zombie school" on the second season of The Walking Dead. From there, it's been an exciting ride thanks to the show's insane popularity. Magazine covers to fan tattoos, t-shirts, merchandise and other media marketing...Alex Wayne is most recently recognized as the zombie in the boiler room that ate Lori, in Season 3.
And that's not half bad!

Tony Gowell - Zombie from the Walking Dead!
Tony is a 13yr Office employee of Dragon*Con, a former casting assistant for various agencies in Atlanta, and also a local actor for film, television, commercials and website tutorials. He has worked on Killers, Due Date, The Internship, Life as We Know It, The Blind Side, Single Ladies, Necessary Roughness, Catching Fire, Drop Dead Diva, Franklin & Bash, Hall Pass, and The Vampire Diaries. With the rising popularity of all things undead, it's important to mention his work on the hit film Zombieland and AMC's The Walking Dead. Tony is most recently recognizable as one of the 'barn zombies' , and is excited to talk to fans about his many on set experiences from Seasons 1 & 2.

We use this day as a Charity Event. We collect canned and dry goods in exchange for our free comic book titles for a local food shelter, Nourishment for the Needy.

Artists/Writers:

David Finch - Making his second Free Comic Book Day appearance at Gotham Central! David is known for his work with Marvel titles such as ‘World War Hulk’, ‘X-men’, and ‘Captain America’. After winning The Joe Shuster Award for Outstanding Artist in 2009, he moved to DC Comics to write and draw their New 52 title ‘Batman: The Dark Knight.” He now draws The New 52 title ‘Justice League of America’.

Jason Fabok - Gotham Central is proud to present Jason Fabok as he is now working on his own title for DC Comics. Working with writer John Layman on The New 52’s ‘Detective Comics’, Fabok will be joining us for his second year for Free Comic Book Day.

Mike Del Mundo - Born in the Philippines and now local to Toronto, Ontario, Mike Del Mundo is known for his amazing cover work for Marvel. His art spans a large amount of Marvel titles including Marvel Now’s ‘Avengers Arena’, ‘X-Men Legacy’, and ‘Marvel Zombies’. This is the first time we will be hosting Mike and are pleased to add him to our roster.

Leonard Kirk - Leonard has worked on many titles spanning both Marvel and DC Comics. His work can be found on fan favorites like ‘Aquaman’, ‘Detective Comics’, ‘Supergirl’, ‘Ultragirl’ and ‘Dark X-Men’. This is also the first time Leonard has appeared at Gotham Central.

Spent Pencils - Spent Pencils is a collective group of 20+ local artists with various talents. From painters, anime artists, digital artists and skilled pencil workers, the crew of Spent Pencils bring an amazing amount of talent to any event.

Mark Bertolini - A Local Comic writer with a few titles under his belt. Mark has just launched the first issue of this new title ‘Broken’ for Free!

Nicholas Lukic - Nicholas is a local independent filmmaker, artist and writer, currently working on his own comic book series and short films. He will also be at Niagara Falls comic con with local artist Andrew Armelim.

Andrew Armelim -  Andrew is a Independent comic illustrator and graphic designer. His most recent work can be found in the promotional posters for ‘DragonBall Z: Saiyan Saga’ and is working on a project to bring back a lovable 80’s character in a fresh new comic series drawn by himself.

Chris Burke - Also known as Toronto Joker or That Joker Guy, Chris’ photo-realistic renderings of beloved characters as well as his own comic ‘Comic Sins’ always garner attention of their own next to his painted face.

Character Attractions:

Toronto Deadpool - He is everyone’s favorite Merc with a Mouth and here’s hoping he brings a chimichanga cart with him.

Toronto X-Men - The Gang is all here to represent Mutant Kind and keep us all safe from Magneto and the Brotherhood’s elitist ways.

Toronto Ironman - It wouldn’t be a party without Marvel’s favorite billionaire, playboy, genius, philanthropist in attendance. Comes completely suited.

Ontario Ghostbusters - Do you experience feelings of dread in your basement or attic? Have you or your family ever seen a spook, spectre or ghost? If the answer is “yes,” then don’t wait another minute. Pick up the phone and call the professionals…

Back to the Future DeLorean - If you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style? Take a trip in the front seat of the famed DeLorean and have photographic proof of the trip. If you meet Darth Vader and he tells you he’s from planet Vulcan… something is a muck.

Arkham Batman and Robin - Sworn to protect the city of Gotham after the death of his parents, Bruce Wayne adopts the name of Batman… and a boy wonder to aid him. Towering at 6’10, you can’t miss this opportunity to meet the ultimate Batman and Robin combo.
